Passports

The staff in the Clerk of Court’s Satellite Office at the Joseph S. Yenni Building was recently recognized for having the highest performance rate in Louisiana for processing passport applications. This Excellence in Performance citation once again shows that our office is committed to the highest standard in public service.

The clerk of court’s marriage license department provides and accepts applications for United States passports.  The clerk of court also offers passport photo service.  You may contact the Marriage License Department at (504) 364-2922 (West Bank); (504) 736-6390 (East Bank); or by e-mail at marriageinfo@jpclerkofcourt.us.  Office hours are 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays.  HOWEVER, if obtaining a passport or marriage license, please be at the office no later than 4:15 P.M. in order for us to complete the process by closing time.

Documents Required to Obtain a Passport

  1. Proof of U.S. citizenship – either a certified copy of your birth certificate, an expired passport, or original naturalization papers.  ***NOTE – Per U.S. State Dept. regulations, applicants must submit 1 photocopy of each of these documents with the passport application.  The clerk of court may make the copies for the applicant, but will charge $1.00 per page in addition to other fees.***
  2. Proof of identity, e.g., a valid driver’s license.
  3. One passport photograph (studio pictures measuring 2″ X 2″).  If you do not have the required photograph, the clerk of court’s office will take your picture for a fee at the time you submit your application.

Forms

Only the passport application may be submitted to our office.  The others must be submitted directly to the U.S. Passport Agency.

The forms you print must be clear and sharp. Applications that are blurred or illegible will not be accepted. They must be printed in black print on white paper. The paper must be 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches, with no holes or perforations, at least medium (20 lb.) weight, and with a matte surface. Thermal paper, dye-sublimation paper, special inkjet paper, and other shiny papers are not acceptable.

Fees

Routine Service is currently about 6-8 weeks and Expedited Service is 2-3 weeks.

Fees are established by the U.S. State Department.

The cost is $130.00 for those ages 16 and older using Routine Service. If you would like your passport to be expedited the following fees will apply ($130.00 Passport, $60.00 for Expedited Service, and an optional fee of $19.53 for overnight return totaling $190 or $209.53). (This passport is normally valid for 10 years from the date of issue). Also optional, is a Passport Card for an additional fee of $30.00.

The cost is $100.00 for those ages 15 and younger using Routine Service. If you would like the passport to be expedited the following fees will apply ($100.00 Passport, $60.00 for Expedited Service, and an optional fee of $19.53 for overnight return totaling $160.00 or $179.53).  (This passport is normally valid for 5 years from the date of issue). Also optional, is a Passport Card for an additional fee of $15.00.

Fees are payable in check or money order to: “U.S. Dept. of State”. The passport renewal fee is $130.00 per passport for Routine Service ($190.00 or $209.53 Expedited Service), and must be mailed to the address on the application by the bearer. The Clerk of Court cannot do Renewals. Children’s passports (if issued under age 15) cannot be renewed. You must get a new passport every 5 years.

A $35.00 execution fee per passport, payable in cash, money order, check, debit, or credit card is due to the Clerk of Court. The fee for the Clerk of Court’s passport photo service is $10.00. Checks and money orders for fees to the Clerk of Court should be made payable to “Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court”.

***NOTE – Per U.S. State Dept. regulations, applicants must submit the certified copy and 1 photocopy of your birth certificate and/or original naturalization papers when you submit your application.  The Clerk of Court may make the copies for the applicant, but will charge $1.00 per page in addition to other fees.***

Passport Card

Customers will now have the option to apply for a Passport Book, a Passport Card, or Both on the new DS-11, DS-82, and DS-5504 forms.  The Passport Card may be used only for land and sea travel between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.  The Passport Card will provide a less expensive, smaller, and more convenient alternative for those who travel to these destinations.  The Passport Card cannot be used for air travel.  Further information regarding the Passport Card can be found on the U.S. Passport Agency Internet web site:  www.travel.state.gov.

Photos

Age Requirement

Minors under the age of 16 need the signatures of both parents, or documentation as to why that is not possible, in order to apply for a passport.
