Preservation of Index Books For Recordations Prior to 1967

Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court Jon A. Gegenheimer is pleased to announce that the clerk of court’s office has completed imaging its mortgage and conveyance index books.  The ambitious project involved the digitization of 200 bound volumes of real estate index records.  These records are the keys to locating millions of documents filed with the mortgage and conveyance office since 1825, when Jefferson Parish was created by legislative act.  Many of the volumes, which weigh up to 40 pounds each, had become tattered and soiled from decades of use by the general public and clerk of court employees.  Some others were water-damaged, and the digitization effort ensures the security of these records by eliminating the risk of their destruction by malicious act, fire, or natural disaster.

The images are available at no charge to the general public utilizing the mortgage and conveyance system on the 2nd floor of the General Government Building, 200 Derbigny Street, Gretna, or on the 2nd floor of the Archives building located at 327 Huey P. Long Avenue, Gretna.

Subscribers of the clerk of court’s remote access system, known as JeffNet, also have access to the images, and are now afforded the ability to conduct complete title research 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.  This will result in a more streamlined, efficient process for attorneys and notaries preparing for closings on mortgages and acts of sale.

Mortgage and Conveyance Index Books

Over 200 index books were imaged for preservation and easy dissemination through JeffNet. These books weigh nearly 40 pounds each.

The index books, like the ones shown here, have become tattered from decades of heavy usage by the general public. Digitization preserves the information within these books and eliminates the risk of their destruction by natural disaster, fire, or malicious act.
