The Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court is a constitutionally created and elected official who serves as the clerk of the 24th Judicial District Court, First Parish Court, Second Parish Court, and Juvenile Court. Guided by the office’s motto, “Public Servants Serving the Public,” the Clerk of Court’s office is committed to safeguarding official records and providing courteous, efficient service to residents, attorneys, and the judiciary alike.
Custodian of Records
The Clerk of Court is responsible for maintaining and preserving the official records of the 24th Judicial District Court, First Parish Court, Second Parish Court, and Juvenile Court. This includes:
- Civil filings — petitions, motions, judgments, and related case documents
- Criminal filings — case records for the district’s criminal docket
- Traffic records — citations and related court filings
- Marriage licenses — issuance and permanent recordation
- Mortgage and conveyance records — property transactions, mortgages, and other instruments affecting real estate in Jefferson Parish
Chief Elections Officer
The Clerk of Court also serves as Jefferson Parish’s chief elections officer. In this role, the office qualifies candidates for municipal, parish, state legislative, and certain judicial elections, and works alongside the Louisiana Secretary of State, the Parish Council, and the Board of Election Supervisors to help administer elections held in the parish.
Recorder of Public Records
As custodian of public records, the Clerk of Court’s office makes civil, criminal, traffic, marriage license, and mortgage and conveyance records available for public inspection, consistent with Louisiana public records law. Records may be viewed in person during regular business hours, and copies are available for a nominal fee.
